The couple fall in love and elope together, much to the dismay of Manon's brother and the wealthy nobleman, Guillot Morfontaine, who had hoped to take the young woman's hand. The score, drawn from music by Massenet, is rich in melody and emotion, whilst the central roles are some of the most boldly choreographed in ballet.
