As this is now in its 16th year (and set to play for another year) it must be pretty good. The musical is a nature/nurture controversy, about two bothers separated at birth. Sociologically it is pretty formulaic stuff, but even if the plot is thin, the musical is really enjoyable !
As this is now in its 16th year (and set to play for another year) it must be pretty good. The musical is a nature/nurture controversy, about two bothers separated at birth. Sociologically it is pretty formulaic stuff, but even if the plot is thin, the musical is really enjoyable ! One of the twins, Mickey, lives with his poor mother, whilst his brother Eddie is given to his father’s boss. The first act is filled with laughs and shows the childhood of the boys. The play continues to explore issues of class and poverty - as well as a superstition, and moves to the darker view of the world in Act 2. Maureen Nolan, is the mother and key role and is spot-on with her big voice and maternal role. Richard Munday and Mark Hutchinson play Mickey and Eddie, respectively, and have to cover the gap as funny 7-year-olds to serious, brooding men. Philip Stewart narrates and his excellent voice helps to keep the play moving along. The songs are really memorable and uplifting.
