Now the longest running show in the history of Her Majesty's Theatre, Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom Of The Opera" opened to enormous success in October 1986 and has been running to capacity ever since, but can this musical still deliver? This is Lloyd Webber at his best. And though the newspaper musical critics like to put Lloyd Webber down for what they think is superficial candy type music, the audiences demonstrate just how good they think this is. Though its true, over time the production changes with the change of actors.
"The Phantom Of The Opera" it is billed as London's most haunting love story. The story revolves around a beautiful opera singer and a young composer ashamed of his disfigured physical appearance with a desperate desire to hide himself away. This has been adapted from the novel by Gaston Leroux, and has been the subject of a cult black and white film.
For those who have seen Phantom at different stages of its run, the production seems to gives as great a thrill as it first did. The scenes move from the singer’s dressing room to the Phantom’s den, and the staging is brilliant and excitingly theatrical. Wonderful songs, which are, by now, quite well known. If you haven’t been yet – you must go and see it.
