Les Miserables - London

Les Miserables - London
£21.00

Les Misrables at the Queens Theatre, LondonLondon's longest running musical, an epic classic Alfie Boe is scheduled to perform from Thursday 23rd June - Saturday 26th November 2011, excluding all Monday evening and Wednesday matinees . He is scheduled not to perform on the following dates: 31 Oct - 5 November, 12 November and 18 NovemberPlease note that the performance schedule is subject to change without notice. Some Les Misrables tickets are not available to book online. Please call the booking hotline if you cannot find availability on the website.Les Misrables, recently voted the world's number one musical in a BBC poll, started its sensational career after legendary impresario Cameron Mackintosh heard a recording of the original French adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel which had flopped dramatically in Paris in 1981.Mackintosh saw potential and with some brand new lyrics from Herbert Kretzmer added to the powerful original score by Alan Boublil and Claude-Michel Schnberg, Les Misrables made its London debut at the Barbican in September 1985, moving to the West End's Palace Theatre three months later where it played for eighteen years before its transfer to the Queens Theatre where it remains.Reviews of Les Misrables were mixed at first, with many critics complaining about its length, its heavy going content and that a great piece of French literature had been forced into a musical. However, the strength of the story and the power of the performances given by the Royal Shakespeare company meant that word spread and Les Misrables was an enormous success. Possibly due to the lukewarm reception the show received on its inception, Les Misrables was not showered with awards although the Broadway production won eight Tonys when it opened in 1987. The show's international success has been constant ever since, with productions having played in thirty-eight different countries and translations into twenty different languages. Despite uneasy beginnings, this powerful story of peace and conflict, love and hate stands deservedly as the world's favourite musical and the longest running musical production in West End history.

Chicago

Chicago
£72.00

Sure. We could tell you about the theme of the show- the fleeting and shallow nature of media celebrity- and discuss its relevance to the star-struck culture in which we live. But, face it, the real reason for seeing Chicago is to watch incredibly fit dancers slink and slither through all that sexy Bob Fosse choreography and freeze into those muscle-popping asymmetrical poses he likes so much. Themes are fine, but music and dance win the day in Chicago."As close to musical theatre heaven as you are likely to get" The News of The World"This great production of a magnificent show brings the old razzle-dazzle back to the West End with a vengeance" The Daily TelegraphPopular songs: Razzle Dazzle A Little Bit of Sunshine All That Jazz

Billy Elliot

Billy Elliot
£49.00

Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace Theatre, LondonLee Hall and Elton John's multi-award winning musicalWith a book and lyrics by Lee Hall who wrote the screenplay for the film, the stage adaptation ofBilly Elliothas only been enhanced by a score from Elton John. Naturally, the musical is longer than the film, and this allowed for more emphasis on the miners' crisis of 1984-85 than in the film. When this is contrasted with Billy's struggle for both freedom of self expression and acceptance, it makes for an exhilarating and emotionally involving theatre experience. This also means that the stage show has a darker, harder edge than the film. It contains much of the same strong language and violent scenes, meaning thatBilly Elliotis quite unsuitable for young children.Billy Elliotopened at the Victoria Palace Theatre in March 2005 and the press uniformly heralded the new show with its sensational dance sequences (choreographed by Peter Darling who also worked on the film), its drama and its sensitive handling of delicate issues. In 2006, Billy Elliot won six of the nine Olivier awards it had been nominated for, marking the first time that the Best Actor in a Musical title was awarded in a shared capacity, to the three boys who shared the show's title role. One of the boys, Liam Mower, was also the award's youngest ever recipient. The show's success has also gone global. The Broadway production opened in 2008, winning 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical.*Signed Performances: 9th August 2012 MatineeFrom 31 January 2011 to mid-January 2012 escalator refurbishment at Victoria Underground station may affect your journey.
